Chief Complaint: Depression

History: Life long history of depression, becoming more pronounced in the last three years with the loss of a relationship and mounting “stress” in the workplace. Had been on antidepressants in the past (for 3-4 years) and does not want to return to them.

Symptoms: Overwhelming feeling of sadness, unprovoked crying jags, racing thoughts, insomnia, vivid dreams, low energy, poor concentration, “foggy” feeling in head, poor digestion, tendency toward loose stools, “heavy” feeling overall. Very “emotional” before period.

Palpation: Slippery, slightly wiry pulse. Abdomen feels taught and bloated. A dull pain felt upon palpation.

Observation: Tongue body is pink. Coat is thick, white and sticky.

Patient does not make eye contact easily and speaks in a low, droning voice.

OM Diagnosis: SP Qi Xu, with Dampness/Phlegm, LV qi stagnation

Treatment Principle: Tonify the spleen, dry damp, move the LV
