The Acupuncture Treatment of Shoulder Pain
Chief Complaint: Right shoulder pain
Medical History: Patient is a 54 year old female massage therapist seeing 10-15 people per week. She has been seeking help for this problem for the past 2 years with the results being that it takes the pain away yet it always returns. Her outlook is positive and she has healthy diet and exercise habits.
Questioning exam: The pain is worse stress and on palpitations her whole right side is tender along that gallbladder channel. Patient has bouts of insomnia which have no particular cycle.

Acupuncture for Neck and Shoulder Pain
Chief Complaint: neck and shoulder pain since 16 years
Medical History: young woman, 35, refugee immigrant from Cuba, married with one daughter; gave history of persistent neck and shoulder pain of 16 yrs duration which came and went and tended to become persistent; worse at end of day, post-stress. works hard at a job and homemaker; non-smoker drinker etc. Indigenous- American diet; obviously overworked; has been to hospitals, has had X rays, medications, to no avail. Heard of our Community Acupuncture Clinic Refugee Component and came for help.

Chief Complaint: neck and shoulder pain/tension
Medical History: patient woke up with crick in neck one week ago, initially got better, then today much worse.
Questioning exam: pain at base of skull (UB10/GB 20 area) and shoulders (GB21 area) more L sided; irritability; pain at 7 on scale of 1-10.
Pulse exam: pulse wiry overall
Tongue exam: red sides and tip, scant coat

Chief Complaint: Pain in the Shoulder joints
Western Diagnosis: Shoulder Pain
Medical History: 17 year old male patient with a history of numerous bodily injuries due to playing football. The shoulder injury history of six months. Pneumothorax history ten years prior.
Questioning exam: Right shoulder pain constant dull ache, to sharp pain upon movement. Pain scale 8/10. Energy level 9/10. No decreased motion in joints.

Traditional Asian Medicine for Shoulder Pain
Chief Complaint: Right shoulder pain for 2 months.
Medical History: In two months ago, he started a new job where he does a tremendous amount of lifting and balancing of heavy doors and cabinets. He feels sharp and stabbing pain over his right upper trapezius muscle and around his shoulder joint when he moves his shoulder in abduction. He feels better after a massage and hot Epsom salt baths but nothing has totally relieved his pain. Physical exam revealed pain and tenderness on palpation of the right upper trapezius, biceps brachii tendon, deltoid, pectoralis minor insertion and all of the neck muscles especially the scalenes and posterior muscle group.

Western Diagnosis: sprain and strain
History: acute overwork due to yard work; no other acute or chronic health complaints.
Symptoms: Left sided shoulder pain between scapula and spine.
Palpation: pulse is slightly rapid, overall slightly tight.
